Is Adrafinil Legal?

Is Adrafinil Legal?

For those of us with big dreams, there are rarely enough hours in the day. Our lives are filled with all the tasks that we have to do and we often fall asleep tired and exhausted.

Things start off manageable, but, after a while, the exhaustion catches up with us. We are no longer able to get up as quickly in the morning. We fight to stay awake during the day and our overall level of energy dips drastically.

This is the point where most of us look to caffeine and other stimulants to keep up with the demands of our daily lives. These work for a while. But, pretty soon, that familiar feeling of tiredness and general exhaustion creeps back into our lives.

We can’t give up. We must achieve our dreams. Still, how can one strive to be the best when the mind is willing but the body is tired?

Don’t fret. There are several options to pursue to help you get your spark back. One of the most effective is a little drug called Adrafinil.

What is Adrafinil?

It’s a powerful nootropic agent that promotes a heightened sense of awareness and alertness. However, unlike other similar stimulants, it doesn’t have many of the negative effects, like anxiety and agitation. Adrafinil is also used as a study aid and to increase energy and productivity.
While Adrafinil does have many benefits, those who suffer from epilepsy or any kidney or liver impairment should shy away from it. The same is recommended for pregnant women or those on anti-psychotic medication.

Also, if you do plan on taking it for an extended period of time, it’s a good idea to have your doctor check out your liver enzymes.

Is Adrafinil Legal?

With all its benefits, you might be wondering if Adrafinil is legal. There’s no way that a pill with such amazing mental benefits is readily available to the public. Well, the truth of the matter is, the answer to this question is determined by where you live.

For instance, in United States, it falls under a little gray area in terms of substances. That is, while it’s not been regulated or Approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), it’s not illegal to use or buy. Whereas in the United Kingdom, while not yet officially approved for human consumption, it’s possible to import small amounts (like a 3 month supply) for personal use. In Canada, it’s considered to be an unregulated drug. But, it remains legal to buy it as a research compound or to import small quantities for personal use. Lastly, in Australia The Department of Health and Ageing Therapeutic Goods Administration categorizes Adrafinil as a Schedule IV Prescription only medicine. In other words, you must have a prescription to purchase it in this country.

It’s also important to note Adrafinil is on a list of prohibited substances for those who engage in athletic competition. Thus, athletes shouldn’t take it. Furthermore, because regulations change frequently, it’s important to check with your country’s regulating agency to determine its legal status in your specific jurisdiction.

Does it Have Any Side Effects?

If Adrafinil is taken properly (recommended dosing at the correct times), it will not cause any side effects for most. Still, if they do occur, they are often mild and include restlessness, weight loss, insomnia, loss of appetite, skin rash or other irritation, anxiety, stomach pain, nausea, and headache.

There is some good news, however, for those who experienced mild side effects. Many of these occurrences disappear once the body adjusts to the Adrafinil. In fact, it’s common to only experience side effects for the first couple of weeks of taking Adrafinil. If side effects are still present at this time, switching to a lower dosage may be just the ticket.

Insomnia is also a commonly reported effect of Adrafinil. But, in many cases, it’s not a truly negative reaction to the drug. Rather, it’s likely due to taking the Adrafinil at the wrong time. Because the compounds in this drug have a long half-life, its stimulating effects are felt for many hours after being consumed. To avoid sleep issues, Adrafinil should be taken in the morning.

The Bottom Line

For many of us who are looking to get some of our old energy back, Adrafinil can be a boon. However, it’s important to remember that it is a drug, and must be taken in recommended dosages and at the recommended times. Furthermore, because of its ambiguous legal state, it’s important to check the rules in your specific area in terms of usage. Still, with its many benefits, Adrafinil is worth a try for those who are looking for a boost in alertness, without the negative effects associated with stimulants.
